6. Unexplained weight loss
Often, people who have diabetes lose weight without trying. The reason weight loss occurs is because the lack of insulin affects the body’s ability to transport glucose into the cells, which means that the sugars cannot be stored and used for energy.
The body believes that it is not receiving enough food. In order to compensate for the lack of energy supplied by glucose, the body starts to rely on proteins from the muscles to provide its energy. Additionally, because the kidneys are working harder, the body is using more energy, which also causes weight loss.
