We now know that sleep requires a healthy function of mitochondria – the energy factories of the cells which have the critical job of producing useful energy (ATP) from glucose. Without proper energy function, you experience sleep disturbances and wake to feel tired.
This is further exacerbated by hunger, constant thirst, and nocturnal enuresis – waking in the night needing to either drink water or go to the toilet.
